Christmas at the Savoy 2019

REVIEW

As the staff at the Savoy hotel in London raise their champagne glasses on New Year’s Eve to welcome 2020 after a seamless celebration dinner service, only the audience is burdened with the weight of knowing what is to come.

The pandemic would hit the hospitality industry hard, so there’s a certain nostalgia at looking back at Christmas and New Year last year, when the world was different.

It’s all very glittery and highly entertaining as guests arrive for Christmas, including a regular, the very sweet Mr Howells, who runs a guesthouse in South Wales. He’s greeted with hugs by all the staff as he prepares to celebrate for the first time without his beloved mum.

SUMMARY

Documentary following life in the glamorous London hotel over the festive season, as staff prepare to welcome guests during the hotel's most profitable time of the year. Head butler Sean braces new recruit Michael for how busy he is going to be, while restaurant director Anne prepares the four restaurants and her 160 staff. Cameras also follow regular guest Howell Harris as he spends his first Christmas at the hotel since his mother died, with staff going above and beyond to make sure he has a holiday to remember.
